R and Research

R Commander (Rcmdr) is a GUI for the R programming language, licensed under the GNU General Public License, and developed and maintained by John Fox in the sociology department atMcMaster University. Rcmdr together with its plug-ins (there are for about 5000 packages) is perhaps the most robust and viable to commercial statistical packages like SPSS and MINITAB. The package is useful to both advanced and novices.
Rcmdr can be installed from within R, like any R package. R is meant for advanced users, whereas, Rcmdr is meant for novices. Some of the advantages of R are:
1) Free: freely available from http://cran.r-project.org/. At present downloads are available for Linux, MacOSX and Windows users. The present version is R-2-15-0.
2) Wholesome: Though R is language editor, there are almost all statistical applications available in the form of packages. Have a comprehensive look at http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/ and try to count the number.
3) High learning curve
4) Community
